| Joan, a fifth generation Michigander is known throughout the state of Michigan as an artist specializing in silk screen, drawing and stained glass. in 1973 she was named the states outstanding art teacher. She has won two Project Teach Awards.
In 1980 she moved to Tennessee with her sixth generation Tennessean husband, Fred. They live on Freds family farm in Parrottsville. Joan has been an artist in residence in the Cocke County Schools and is currently drawing some of the interesting Tennessee historical homes and buildings before they have all been destroyed.
Joan has studied art since she was a child, beginning with lessons at the Detroit Institute of Art. She says Ive been drawing and painting for years, using many techniques and materials. I never tire of it. I learn something new from each project. She designs her prize winning dolls and crafts them by hand.
She uses antique fabrics and trim as much as possible. The characters take on their own personality and tell her how to dress them. They are like small new friends. One of her dolls was chosen for the angel tree in the White House, Christmas - 1993. a second doll was chosen for the White House snowman tree in 1998.
Joan has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Mcihigan and a Master of Arts Degree from Eastern Mcihigan Universtity. She has studied painting and dollmaking at Arrowmont school of Art in Gatlinburg.
She has won several graphic awards and her work can be found in private and public collections through out the United States. Some of her work is owned and displayed at the K-Mart World Headquarters, The Detroit Edison Company, The Messa Insurance Co. and the Michigan Education Assoication. |
